MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

Marry, knowing what you sign.

Choosing a regime, protecting your spouse, buying together, marrying between Mauritius and another country: the notary clarifies your choices before they bind you.

WHAT THE OFFICE DOES

Building together, on clear foundations.

Marriage contracts

Choose between community of property and separation of property, or a regime tailored to your situation.

Changing regime

As your life changes, your regime can change too, under the conditions set by law.

Buying together

Married or not, set out who owns what and in what share.

Protecting your spouse

Gifts between spouses, wills: preparing for the future of the one who remains.

International couples

Spouses of different nationalities, non-residents marrying in Mauritius: a contract that takes both countries into account.

Separation

After a divorce, the notary winds up the regime and divides the property.

Your questions, answered.

Is a marriage contract compulsory?

No, but it lets you choose your regime knowingly rather than by default. It is drawn up as a notarial deed before the marriage.

Does the matrimonial regime affect inheritance?

No. It governs your property during the marriage. After a death, the inheritance rules are the same whichever regime you chose.

Can we change our matrimonial regime?

Yes, under certain conditions set by law. The notary explains the procedure and its consequences.
